Adjunct-BHCI Capstone

Job Type

Faculty Position at CMU

Job Description

The Human-Computer Interaction Institute at Carnegie Mellon University is pleased to announce an adjunct faculty opening to co-teach the Bachelor of Human-Computer Interaction (BHCI) Capstone Project Course this coming Spring 2023 semester. This course is a single 12-unit course. In this course, interdisciplinary teams of students enrolled in the HCI primary or secondary major, and in their last semester as seniors, do a semester-long project for a (non-paying) client in which they develop and prototype a new digital application or service, grounded in an understanding of goals, needs, and context through user research, including technology probes, and design as research.

The BHCI adjunct will work with the BHCI program director, HCII Teaching Faculty and another adjunct to guide approximately 5 Capstone project teams through the spring semester from January 17, 2023 to May 11, 2023. During the spring semester the BHCI adjunct attends lectures in-person on Mondays and Wednesdays, 3:30 – 4:50pm, at specific dates scattered throughout the semester. (The dates are TBD; please contact us for more information.) Outside of class time, the BHCI adjunct meets weekly for 45 minutes with each of the 5 Capstone project teams at times to be scheduled at a mutually-agreed-upon time that is convenient for both the BHCI adjunct and the project team. Adjuncts grade the teams they advise and write detailed feedback 4 times during the semester, twice for a report and twice for a presentation. Adjuncts are expected to respond to student emails within 36 hours Monday through Friday. Occasionally adjuncts meet individual students at a time that is convenient for both.
