Contextual Inquiry of Analogous Environments

Each of the analogous environments we studied used MI planning systems. Models of each environment were created in order to compare them and uncover overarching breakdowns which were common to all MI planning environments. The environments we studied were:
  1. an autonomous rover project at CMU
  2. PAT Transit Authority
  3. Taco Bell

Think-Alouds using Analogous Applications

We created planning tasks to be completed by novice human planners with paper and pencil and with planning applications available to the general public in order to understand how people reason about constraint based planning and how well they can predict and interpret the decisions that computer planners make. The applications we used were:
  1. Miss Bride (constraint-based wedding planner
  2. MS Project

Expert Interviews

We interviewed mixed initiative planning experts, planner software developers, and expert human planners to try to capture the ways in which the human planner and the computer planner could complement one another and the instances where they were more likely to fail.

Literature Reviews

We reviewed the mixed initiative planning literature, uncovering a wealth of data about the implementation of these systems and their impact on business operations.
