Overview of our research process

Through literature review, contextual inquiry, interviews, prototyping, and visioning, we uncovered a wealth of insights into habit formation and creativity. These discoveries built the foundation for our design.

DEFINING CREATIVITY

Much more than just canvas and paint

We wanted to move beyond our own preconceived biases and come up with a more inclusive and empirical definition of creativity. We asked people to give us six words that they associate with creativity. We got over 70 responses and we compiled our data into a word cloud.

MEETING THE MILLENIAL

A connected web of discerning minds

We dug into the primary literature to learn more about our target audience: millennials. Over time, the layers peeled back to reveal a generation of people who value access over ownership, who are keen to express themselves in novel ways, and who are constantly connected to a global network of peers.

Can behavior be changed?

A plan for daily creativity

We explored BJ Fogg's behavior change model to learn more about the psychology of habit formation. The insights from this exploration convinced us to explore ways to fit neatly into people's daily lives.

PROVOKING REACTIONS

Getting people to speak their minds

We reached out to creative professionals, amatuer designers as well as people who considered themselves boring. We also asked them how they spent the mundane moments in their days. These conversations shed light on the often ignored hours of people's daily lives.

After talking to 20 participants, we conducted an affinity analysis to synthesis all the data

Mapping the creative journey

Based on the insights from the affinity analysis, we created a journey map. As you can see, the process has highs and lows.

Highlighting some of the lows

"I'm easily distracted
by other things"

Millennials are constantly distracted by the stimuli in their environment. There are a lot of things vying for their attention. So it’s really hard to focus

"My creations are
not good as others"

Being constantly exposed to creations that are of an extremely high quality might be a source of inspiration, but it might also end up making someone like Laura feel inadequate.

"Deadlines make
creativity stressful"
