UNBOXED

Unboxed is a mobile application that allows visitors to curate and visualize their personal art collections as they explore the museum. Unboxed lets visitors ‘collect’ interesting, eye-catching artwork into a virtual time capsule. Visitors can share capsules across social media and purchase physical versions.

TARGET VISITORS

While Unboxed will appeal to a wide range of visitors, we designed it keeping 2 distinct groups in mind: Generation Y and families with tweens. The groups we identified are tech savvy and comfortable discussing technology. These traits helped us evolve our design rapidly.
GENERATION Y
Our research revealed that these visitors have high expectations for technology interactions. Unboxed would provide an engaging museum experience and a tangible take-home artifact for this social media savvy generation.
FAMILIES WITH TWEENS
Our research revealed that children get antsy and disrupt the experience for others if not engaged. Unboxed would provide children with engaging interactions throughout the museum galleries and give them an ever present creative release.

PERCEIVED VISITOR NEEDS

We wanted Unboxed to satisfy 3 key perceived needs among visitors: feeling like they have taste, reminiscing their visit to the Warhol, and sharing memorable experiences with friends and family.
FEELING LIKE THEY HAVE TASTE
Our research revealed that visitors take selective pictures in museums and share them on social media. Visitors’ tastes reinforce their identities; they want to control how they are perceived, and Unboxed facilitates this behavior.
REMINISCING ON THEIR VISIT
Our research found that visitors feel limited when photography is restricted, and seek alternative ways to construct identity and remember their visits. In a unique way, Unboxed could provide a substitute to photography at the museum.
SHARE MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES
Our research revealed that souvenirs remind visitors of their museum visits, build loyalty, and often trigger return visits. Visitors want to share memorable experiences and Unboxed should inherently support this.
