Steve Rathje

Steve Rathje is an incoming Assistant Professor in the Human-Computer Interaction Institute at Carnegie Mellon University (starting Fall of 2026), with a joint appointment (by courtesy) in Social and Decision Sciences.

Steve’s research focuses on how digital technologies (such as artificial intelligence and social media) shape important psychological outcomes, including polarization, intergroup conflict, mental health, and well-being.

He has published more than 40 papers on these topics in academic journals such as Nature, Science, PNAS, Nature Human Behaviour, and Trends in Cognitive Sciences. His work has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the Templeton World Charity Foundation, and more. He was included on the 2025 Forbes 30 Under 30 list and was named a Rising Star by the American Psychological Association. More information is available at stevenrathje.com.
