Description

"HCI and the Search for Life in the Universe"

The biggest science questions – like whether life arose multiple times in the universe – are profoundly team efforts, even though many of our scientific tools and customs are oriented around disciplinary silos. This talk will describe how the techniques of Human-Computer Interaction can help break these disciplinary silos, creating a force multiplier in large-team physical science projects. The talk will illustrate how a multi-year collaboration around biosignature (or potential signs of past life) identification on the surfaces of Mars and Europa serves as evidence of HCI capabilities driving the engine of physical scientific discovery.

Speaker's Bio

Scott Davidoff uses the methods of Human-Computer Interaction and Data Science to investigate big scientific research questions in Astrobiology, Planetary and Earth Science. He also transforms how organizations solve technical problems, and has invented problem solving techniques practiced at the world's leading companies and taught at its leading universities. Scott founded the Human-Centered Design Group at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which he led for 13 years. He also co-founded Virtualitics, the world’s first immersive visual analytics platform. Dr. Davidoff has MS, M.HCI, and PhD degrees in Human-Computer Interaction, all from Carnegie Mellon.
