Description

When attempting to provide support for geographically distributed teams, designers have often focused on improving and enriching information exchange over distance. An ethnographic study of the full lifecycle of three virtual temporary teams reveals that interactions in non-face-to-face meetings often fail to operate like “normal” in-person meeting interactions, suggesting that not only technology limitations but also “broken” rules of social interaction may contribute to lack of team engagement and participation over time. Drawing on observations, interviews and a microanalysis of audio and videotapes of various teams as they meet in various configurations, I explore implications for supporting distributed teams in their socio-emotional as well as technological meeting requirements.

Speaker's Bio

Rosanne Siino is a PhD candidate in Stanford University’s Center for Work, Technology and Organization in the School of Engineering. Her current interests center on the socio-emotional effects of digital technologies on how people work, with two research streams reflecting these interests: one stream is focused on social interaction patterns and identity implications of geographically distributed group and team work, and the second explores the socio-emotional impact of increasingly autonomous and agent-oriented digital technologies in the workplace—technologies that seemingly make decisions for workers. Prior to her doctoral studies, Siino spent 16 years in the communications field, serving as Netscape’s Vice President of Corporate Communications from the Internet company’s founding until its purchase by AOL in 1999, creating and directing Netscape’s brand and visibility. She has consulted for numerous high-technology and Internet businesses including AOL, Google, Shutterfly, and PlanetOut. Siino holds a BA in Communications, with minors in Sociology and English, from the University of the Pacific.
