Description

The talk will review cases where design aims at engagement in a variety of ubiquitous computing systems ranging from multitouch screens to pervasive sensing and mobile augmented reality. Engagement is considered in the way systems support involving, evolving and socially mediated interaction. Large multitouch screens in public settings are taken as a particularly promising platform to develop engaging systems in art pieces, exhibitions, urban spaces, and festivals highlighting the design of specific interactive techniques and their impact to engagement. MapLens a augmented reality lens used over a physical map is used in pervasive games and demonstrates the capacity of mobile augmented reality to foster social collocated interaction. EnergyLife is a pervasive system installed in households to turn inhabitants into active players in energy conservation through detailed energy sensing and game inspired design principles. The cases provide insights into design objectives in support of engagement ranging from flow and playfulness to performative and socially mediated interaction. http://users.tkk.fi/~giulio/publications.html

Speaker's Bio

Giulio Jacucci is Professor of Computer Science at the University of Helsinki, Professor at the Department of Design, Aalto University, and leads the Network Society Program at the Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT. He has a background in computer science and interaction design with a PhD in information processing science. Has visited previously the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics in Darmstadt and the Vienna University of Technology. He participates in organizing and in program committees of several conferences in the area of human-computer interaction and ubiquitous computing. Prof Giulio Jacucci is currently coordinator of BeAware a FP7 EU ICT project involving 8 European partners (www.energyawareness.eu). He is also co-founder and chairman of the board of MultiTouch.fi a company commercialising products for scalable multitouch screens.
