Description

Understanding and representing experiences has captured the imagination of philosophers, artists and indeed everyday folk since before Aristotle. Today, computational and technical devices provide new opportunities to record, summarize and understand experiences at a variety of scales and dimensions. In this talk I will discuss my work designing experience capture systems, deploying experience data authoring applications, and curating interactive exhibitions summarizing complex events. Along the way, we will look at the integrative relationship between HCI, design, art and culture and introduce ‘XSEAD’, a new NSF sponsored portal for disseminating exemplar, current, and in-progress work integrating science, engineering, art and design. The XSEAD portal will highlight the significance of hybrid collaboration and the active process of engagement as paramount in crafting experiential systems of societal and cultural value (http://xsead.org/).

Speaker's Bio

Aisling Kelliher is an associate professor in the School of Design at CMU. She creates and studies interactive media systems for enhancing communication, learning and reflection. Grounded within the fields of human-computer-interaction, multimedia, and interaction design, her work is motivated by a desire to carefully integrate computational processes into our everyday mediated experiences. Her work has been published in a wide-variety of journals and conferences including TOMCCAP, SIGCHI, ACM MM, ISEA, CIKM and ICWSM, and exhibited at leading national venues including SIGGRAPH, the ASU Art Museum and the DeCordova Museum. Her work is supported by grants from the MacArthur Foundation, the NSF CreativeIT, NSF DRK12, NSF IGERT, and NSF EAGER programs. Aisling holds a B.A. in Communications Studies from Dublin City University and a M.Sc. in Multimedia Systems from Trinity College, Dublin. She also received a M.S. and a Ph.D. in Media, Arts and Sciences from the MIT Media Lab.
