Livehoods Wins Best Paper Award at ICWSM 2012

News

Work by Justin Cranshaw (ISR), Raz Schwartz (visiting scholar), Jason Hong (HCII), and Norman Sadeh (ISR) recently won the best paper award at The 6th International Conference on Weblogs and Social Media (ICWSM 2012).

Their project, called Livehoods, looks at using geotagged social media to understand the structure, character, and dynamics of a city. Using 18 million check-ins from the location-based social network foursquare, they applied machine learning algorithms to cluster the data and find patterns about how people used different neighborhoods.

Please see http://livehoods.org/ for more information and to see the Livehoods for several major cities.
