Mayank Goel Presents at World Economic Forum Summer Gathering in China

Mayank Goel, an associate professor in the Software and Societal Systems Department and Human-Computer Interaction Institute, recently attended a World Economic Forum gathering in Dalian, China.
Goel gave a talk titled, “Where Technologies Converge,” and demonstrated his lab’s work on passive behavior and health sensing during the Annual Meeting of the New Champions, held June 25 to 27.
During his talk, Goel described how sensing technologies can help people take better care of themselves at home. His lab has developed sensors that measure people’s activities, behaviors and movements and can detect patterns or changes in this data. These sensors could help people with dementia remember to accomplish tasks, remind people if they forget a critical step in a daily life task, monitor behavior and movements to help clinicians diagnose mental health concerns and more accurately track exercise.
Goel demoed a device that contained several sensors and could fit on a dining or side table. The device could recognize activities of daily living, detect exercises, and measure respiration to accurately assess how many calories are burned using a thermal camera.
