Description
The Ph.D. Open House is for students accepted into the Ph.D. program at the Human-Computer Interaction Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. This 3-day open house is an opportunity for accepted students to meet and speak with HCII faculty, mingle with current students and see what graduate life is like at Carnegie Mellon and in the city of Pittsburgh. We hope you are able to join us for the 2016 Ph.D. Open House!

Thursday, March 17
6:30 PM - 9:30 PM: “Welcome to Pittsburgh” hosted by current Ph.D. students. Mingle with current students and get a taste of what CMU graduate life is like
Friday, March 18
Take the hotel shuttle or walk from the hotel to Carnegie Mellon's Newell-Simon Hall, NSH 3305 for today's events. We are happy to provide our open house guests breakfast, lunch and dinner.
- 9:00-9:15 AM: “Welcome to HCII” introduction. Breakfast will be served.
- 9:15-10:25 AM: Introduction to the HCII Ph.D. program with Program Director Scott Hudson (and a quick visit with Department Head Anind Dey)
- 10:25-10:30 AM: Break
- 10:30-Noon: Faculty talks in NSH 3305. Faculty will present current research projects.
- Noon-1:30 PM: Lunch with some HCII Faculty. Walk with faculty to restaurant and then return to NSH 3305
- 1:45-2:00 PM: Prep Talk for faculty appointments in NSH 3305. Get your individualized schedules & a sense of “how it works”
- 2:00-6:00 PM: One-on-one and small group appointments with faculty (in faculty offices)
- 6:00-6:45 PM: Lab tours and demos. Meet in the Kiesler-Kraut Commons and visit HCII lab spaces
- 6:45 PM: Pickup for Open House Reception - in front of NSH
- 7:00-9:00 PM: Dinner Reception. Enjoy an informal dinner reception in your honor, with HCII faculty, Ph.D. students, and HCII support staff at the home of Professor Jeff Bigham. Reception address: 1401 Beechwood Blvd., Pittsburgh, PA 15217
- 9:00 pm to 11:00 pm: (Optional) Friday night out with HCII Ph.D. students. Hang out with students to see where they go out on a Friday night in Pittsburgh
Saturday, March 19
Faculty will meet you at the hotel to take you to brunch before arriving at Newell-Simon Hall for the remainder of the day. We are happy to provide our open house guests with brunch and dinner.
- 10:00 AM-1:00 PM: Brunch with HCII faculty. Faculty will meet you at the hotel and bring you to a relaxing brunch
- 1:00-1:15 PM: “Pittsburgh is Wonderful” presentation
- 1:15-2:45 PM: Student presentations in NSH 3305. Listen to current students talk about their research
- 2:45-3:15 PM: Wrap up with Scott Hudson and Queenie Kravitz. Bring any questions you might still have: academic, logistical, administrative and other
- 3:15-4:15 PM: Campus tours. Walk on and around CMU’s campus for a tour
- 4:15-5:45 PM: Residence tours. Tour a few of our students’ residences to glimpse graduate student lifestyles
- 6:00-10:00 PM: Dinner out on the town. Meet up with current students to go out to dinner and see what they love about the city of Pittsburgh.
