Abstract:
In my dissertation research, I aim to design a more inclusive future of digitally-mediated work for individuals engaged in non-traditional, alternative working arrangements such as crowd or “gig” workers, online freelancers, and micro-entrepreneurs. My dissertation work contributes three peer-to-peer systems which introduce novel algorithms and interaction design patterns in order to scaffold skill, career and professional identity development among this individualized workforce. To inform the design of these systems, I leverage both human-centered and participatory design methodologies where I primarily engage workers with diverse gender and racial identities and socioeconomic status. I argue that because I have been able to embed myself in the communities I collaborate with and build genuine and frank relationships, I have been able to uncover overlooked challenges minority workers may face when attempting to engage in alternative forms of work.

To begin, Hirepeer, introduces new algorithms which enable peer-assessed hiring among online freelancers by resolving conflicts of interest. Hirepeer’s impartial peer assessment opens up opportunities for high-quality peer feedback on online freelancer job materials. The second system, Peerdea, introduces novel interaction design patterns to scaffold creative skill development among micro-entrepreneurs who are primarily engaged in open-ended work (e.g., product design). Peerdea provides a practice space for creative micro-entrepreneurs to ask for and receive design feedback on in-progress, commercial work. In my proposed work, I describe a third system, Cheerpeer, which aims to support entrepreneurial goal achievement through coordinating peer support in order to combat the isolation which permeates this digitized and distributed workforce.
