This collaboration of researchers in the HCII and Biological Sciences is developing a Cognitive Tutor for problem solving in genetics. Genetics problem solving involves multiple learning goals and the Cognitive Tutor supports student understanding of genetics concepts, abductive reasoning skills (inferring explanations for empirical evidence) and math reasoning skills (including probability, proportional reasoning and algebraic modeling). The tutor is being piloted and evaluated in biology courses in multiple colleges and universities.
