National Tutoring Observatory
Unlocking the Secrets Behind Effective Teaching
2025

The mission of the National Tutoring Observatory is to capture and study great teachers and tutors in one-on-one and small-group settings to uncover the “secret sauce” of effective teaching. By partnering with leading tutoring providers, the Observatory is building the world’s largest repository of video and transcript data on tutoring, showcasing the vital work of educators. Its Million Tutor Moves initiative aims to document at least one million teacher–student interactions across subjects, grade levels, and contexts. These data provide new insight into the craft of teaching, advance the science of instruction, and support technologists developing AI tools. A collaboration among research leaders at CMU, MIT, Cornell, and instructional design firm FreshCognate, the Observatory is unlocking the secrets of effective teaching to shape the future of learning.
