How the Information Revolution is Changing Design Practice
Since 2000, Hugh Dubberly has been a partner in Dubberly Design Office, a San Francisco information design, interaction design, and service design consultancy. Much of the practice is focused on systems that support health and well-being, for clients such as Alere, Amgen, Johnson & Johnson, Lilly, and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. At Apple Computer in the late 1980s, Dubberly managed graphic design and corporate identity and created the technology-forecast film Knowledge Navigator presaging the Internet and interaction via mobile devices.
How to Think About the Future
Stuart Candy is Director of Situation Lab and Associate Professor in CMU School of Design, with courtesy appointments in the School of Architecture and the Entertainment Technology Center. Involved in the futures/foresight field for over two decades, Dr. Candy has been instrumental in the development and global spread of hybrid design/futures processes such as experiential futures, design fiction and speculative design.

Mobile Computing Interaction Design at Microsoft
With a background ranging from mobile computing to digital culture, John SanGiovanni is known for his unique perspective on emerging technologies. In his current role as Technical Evangelist for Microsoft Research, John manages Microsoft’s academic research funding into mobile computing and wireless technologies. Prior this role, John has had several technology learning-related roles with PPI/Knowledge Universe, and worked in entertainment at the Walt Disney Company.
Seminar: Robin Brewer
Robin Brewer is an Assistant Professor in the School of Information at the University of Michigan. She also holds a courtesy appointment in Computer Science and Engineering. Her research lies at the intersection of accessibility and social computing where she studies how older adults and disabled people engage with technology, leveraging strengths of these communities to design for creativity, expression, and agency. Dr. Brewer holds a Ph.D. in Technology and Social Behavior from Northwestern University, M.S.
The Convergence of Alternate Controllers and Musical Interfaces in Interactive Entertainment
Tina Blaine teaches in Carnegie Mellon University’s Entertainment Technology Center, developing collective experiences that integrate sonic discovery, game design and interactive media. Inspired by global traditions and spontaneous music-making, Blaine has a history of building electronic MIDI controller instruments and large-scale audience participation devices for live performance.
HCII Seminar Series - Tom Hope
Tom Hope is a postdoctoral researcher at The Allen Institute for AI (AI2) and The University of Washington, working with Daniel Weld on accelerating scientific discovery and closely collaborating with Eric Horvitz, CSO at Microsoft. Tom completed his PhD with Dafna Shahaf at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in January 2020.

Computer Vision Topics for Interaction
Martial Hebert is a professor at the Robotics Institute, Carnegie Mellon University. His interests include computer vision, especially object recognition, scene understanding, and video analysis, processing of 3-D data for building 3-D models, recognizing objects, and for autonomous navigation, and perception for autonomous mobile systems. His current projects include the development of techniques for recognizing image categories in images, for detecting common events in video sequences, and for building 3-D representation of dynamic environments for unmanned mobile systems.
Graphics Seminar
Engaging Collaborative Learners with Helping Agents
Carolyn Rose is an Assistant Professor with a joint appointment between the Language Technologies Institute and the Human-Computer Interaction Institute. The driving question behind her research is how to develop technology capable of both shaping conversation and supporting conversation to achieve a positive impact on human learning.
AI for Teachers
Bi-directional time travel and other explorations at IBM
Bonnie E. John is a Professor in the HCI Institute in the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. A founding member of the HCII, her raison d'être is to “beat psychology into a shape that engineers can use.” To that end, she produces theories and frameworks to predict human performance on computer-based systems before they are built and embodies these in tools that UI designers and software engineers can easily learn and use in their development process.
