Hudson Named 2024 ACM Fellow

News

Scott Hudson

Professor Scott Hudson is one of 55 distinguished computer scientists named to the class of 2024 ACM Fellows by the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM).

Hudson was recognized for research contributions in user interface software, interactive devices, and computational fabrication applied to human-computer interaction (HCI), as well as academic and service contributions.

The ACM Fellows program recognizes the top 1% of the association's membership for outstanding accomplishments in computing and information technology and/or outstanding service to ACM and the larger computing community. It celebrates the exceptional contributions of leaders from universities, corporations and research centers from around the world, and recognizes individuals from human-computer interaction, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, visualization, and many other areas within the computing field.

Hudson has been with the Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCII) within the Carnegie Mellon University School of Computer Science since 1997. Over those years, Hudson’s research interests have covered a range of topics within human-computer interaction. Fundamentally, Hudson is interested in building things to improve a user experience or enable new capabilities. Older work focused on interactive devices, but today this same curiosity for what’s possible is leading Hudson to explore new types of 3D printers, knitting and weaving machines, and computational fabrication.

Professor Hudson has been a core member of the HCII academic team for decades. In 1999, he led the committee that created the HCII’s Ph.D. program – the first in the country to be solely focused on HCI – and then served as its director for many years to follow. He is now the HCII’s Associate Department Head for Education and leads all programs, courses and teaching assignments.

In addition to his research and academic leadership, Hudson is also highly active in service to the larger HCI, ACM User Interface Software and Technology (UIST) and Special Interest Group on Computer-Human Interaction (SIGCHI) communities. He was previously recognized with the SIGCHI Lifetime Service award in 2017 and the SIGCHI Lifetime Research award in 2021.

"Computing technology has had a tremendous impact in shaping how we live and work today,” ACM President Yannis Ioannidis said in the announcement. “The ACM Fellows program honors the creativity and hard work of ACM members whose specific accomplishments drive innovation and make broader advances possible. In announcing a new class of Fellows each year, we celebrate the impact some of our community’s pioneers make, and highlight the many technical areas of computing in which they work.”

Hudson joins a long legacy of HCII faculty members to receive this prestigious recognition. He is the 12th current or former HCII faculty member to be named an ACM Fellow.

ACM will formally recognize the 2024 Fellows at its annual Awards Banquet on June 14, 2025, in San Francisco, California. For more information about this year’s ACM Fellows, as well as previously named ACM Fellows, visit the ACM Fellows website
