12 Award-Winning Papers with CMU Contributions at the Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems
Our halls are abuzz with talk of “CHI” (pronounced “kai”), the nickname for the upcoming conference on computer human interaction (CHI).
Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) authors will showcase a variety of work at the prestigious Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI 2025), the international conference for Human-Computer Interaction. CHI 2025 will take place April 26 to May 1, 2025, in Yokohama, Japan.
This year, authors from CMU contributed to more than 50 accepted papers (jump down to the list), including 12 award-winning papers. CHI 2025 received more than 5,000 completed paper submissions and awarded Best Papers to the top 1% and Honorable Mentions to the top 5% of papers.
"The HCI Institute continues to do world-class research and we are delighted to showcase so much of our work at this conference,” said Brad Myers, Geschke Director of the Human-Computer Interaction Institute and professor of HCI.
In addition to paper presentations, CMU researchers will also participate in CHI workshops, case studies, the doctoral consortium, late-breaking works, workshops, special interest groups and a course. A search for Carnegie Mellon in the CHI 2025 program returns a full list of involvement.
“The interdisciplinary CHI conference encompasses the research of many of our faculty and students, and has historically been the premiere place to publish work in many areas of human-computer interaction,” said Myers. “I'm looking forward to connecting with our colleagues and alumni at the conference in Japan."
We celebrate the following awards and research affiliated with Carnegie Mellon University authors at CHI 2025.
SIGCHI Awards
Congratulations to the following 2025 SIGCHI award winners with ties to Carnegie Mellon or the HCII. The 2025 SIGCHI Award winners will be celebrated at the awards ceremony on Wednesday, April 30, 2025.
- Nur Yildirim (HCI Ph.D., 2024) received a 2025 SIGCHI Outstanding Dissertation award for her PhD work on “Discovering the Right Things to Design with Artificial Intelligence” while at the HCII. Yildirim is now an assistant professor in the School of Data Science at the University of Virginia.
- Recent grad Karan Ahuja (HCI Ph.D., 2023) received a new special recognition as part of the Google/academia Android XR interaction team.
- James Fogarty (HCI Ph.D., 2006) and Carl DiSalvo (Design Ph.D., 2006) were named to the SIGCHI Academy Class of 2025.
Course
Myers will teach “Interaction Techniques – History, Design and Evaluation,” a short course on the history, current and future design of interaction techniques on April 28. Learn more about the IxT course (C12 at CHI 2025) and his book on interaction techniques.
Doctoral Consortium
PhD student Vivian Shen was selected to attend the Doctoral Consortium, where she will discuss her work on “Sensorimotor-Aligned Design for Pareto-Efficient Haptic Immersion in XR.”
